چکیده

In this tutorial review we illustrate how the interaction of photoactive drugs/potential drugs with proteins or DNA in supramolecular complexes can determine the course of the reactions initiated by the drug absorbed photons, evidencing the mechanistic differences with respect to the solution conditions. We focus on photoprocesses, independent of oxygen, that lead to chemical modification of the biomolecules, with formation of new covalent bonds or cleavage of existing bonds. Representative systems are mainly selected from the literature of the last decade. The photoreactivity of some aryl propionic acids, (fluoro)quinolones, furocoumarins, metal coordination complexes, quinine-like compounds, naphthaleneimides and pyrenylpeptides with proteins or DNA is discussed. The use of light for biomolecule photomodification, historically relevant to biological photosensitization processes and some forms of photochemotherapy, is nowadays becoming more and more important in the development of innovative methods in nanomedicine and biotechnology.

Photochemical transformations of pyridinium salts: mechanistic studies and applications in synthesis.

The discovery, understanding and synthetic exploitation of the photochemical transformation of pyridinium salts are described. The investigations surrounding the remarkable transformation of pyridinium salts into a host of structurally complex motifs have helped extend the comprehension of aromatic and heteroaromatic photochemistry. The synthetic community has, in recent years, recognised the p...

Raman Study of the Photochemistry of Maleic Acid Adsorbed on the Surface of Colloidal Silver

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of maleic (cis; 2-butaneoic acid) and fumaric (trans; 2-butaneoic acid) acids adsorbed on aqueous silver sol particles are reported. These two acids form two groups of isomers which differ only in the relative positions of the two carboxylate groups. The photochemistry of maleic and fumaric acids adsorbed on the surface of silver colloids...

Photochemistry of 5-allyloxy-tetrazoles: steady-state and laser flash photolysis study.

The photochemistry of three 5-allyloxy-tetrazoles, in methanol, acetonitrile and cyclohexane was studied by product analysis and laser flash photolysis. The exclusive primary photochemical process identified was molecular nitrogen elimination, with formation of 1,3-oxazines. These compounds were isolated in reasonable yields by column chromatography on silica gel and were fully characterized. D...

Role of cations and confinement in asymmetric photochemistry: enantio- and diastereo-selective photocyclization of tropolone derivatives within zeolites.

Asymmetric induction in photochemical reactions has been explored using the photochemistry of tropolones as a model. Three approaches have been examined: chiral inductor, chiral auxiliary and [chiral inductor + chiral auxiliary]. All three methods gave excellent asymmetric induction in zeolite and very little or zero induction in solution. Results presented on tropolones clearly illustrate the ...

Effect of salicylic acid on photochemistry and antioxidant capacity in Salvia nemorosa plants subjected to water stress.

Oxidative stress is commonly induced when plants are grown under drought stress conditions. To analyze how salicylic acid (SA) can partly alleviate drought-induced oxidative stress and negative impacts of drought on physiology and growth of Salvia nemorosa plants, we investigated the physiological responses of S. nemorosa to SA application under drought stress. The treatments were composed of Co...
